Alice Sara Ott
Nocturne
John Field's complete nocturnes, filmed by Andrew Staples between historical rooms and imagined ones.
Virtual production for Deutsche Grammophon.
The nocturne is John Field’s. Chopin made it famous.
Alice Sara Ott recorded the complete cycle for Deutsche Grammophon and filmed it with director Andrew Staples — partly in historical rooms, the Meistersaal in Berlin and the library hall in Polling, partly in places that do not exist: a night city in neon, a snowfield, a desert under a foreign sky.
Each nocturne gets the space that answers it, and that space is there while she plays — around the piano, in the Hyperbowl in Munich. Deutsche Grammophon describes the film as a way into Alice Sara Ott’s imagination: “an atmosphere in which the intangible becomes vividly real”.
Four videos, one film.
NOCTURNE premiered on STAGE+ on 15 February 2025, eight days after the album. Deutsche Grammophon released four of the nocturnes as videos, each cut from the film.
No. 9 came first, in November 2024, in the immersive space at VW Drive in Berlin.
