Challenge

Merck Life Science is the hypermarket of the pharmaceutical and chemical industry, with over 300,000 products ranging from tiny lipids to 3,000-litre mixers.

With a new showroom at its headquarters in Darmstadt, the company was aiming to make this enormous range accessible to an audience of customers, employees and interested students alike. The overall challenge was to create a space for an inspiring, educating and amazing experience.

Facts
  • More than 4,000 visitors in the first year in operation
  • Spin-offs are planned for other global locations
  • Exhibits continuously developed for Web and sales tool applications

The Showroom

Idea

We wanted to enable visitors to navigate the expansive exhibition at their own pace and with a focus on content they find most interesting.

To make this individual experience possible, we developed MIC - a friendly, digital and custom companion with the look and feel of the Merck CI.

In AR, MIC leads the way through the showroom, filtering content and giving guidance along the way.

Solution

At the entrance to the showroom, visitors are given a smartphone on which they can configure their personalised tour. They encounter MIC, whom they can customise before choosing one of three main themes that appear in the showroom.

  • Greener Solutions focuses on Merck’s green product alternatives and processes for CO2 reduction.
  • Digital Lab presents examples of how digitalisation is transforming research, production and sales.
  • Faster Pharma shows solutions to improve logistics and delivery to get pharmaceutical products to patients more quickly.

Guides

One highlight is the interaction with the Am Mobius 3L bioreactor. Here we developed an AR game that conveys the individual steps of protein production for medicines from start to finish. But be careful - if you press the wrong button, your tiny proteins will be cooked!

AR Game

The immersive 3D cave provides a unique experience, where visitors can dive into the themed worlds of Merck Life Science with the help of stereoscopic shutter glasses and understand what sustainability and digitalisation mean for Merck.
