Challenge

In 2015, the United Nations agreed on 17 goals to combat poverty, hunger and climate change. Our client, chemical manufacturer Covestro, also committed themselves to these UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). For the appearance at K 2019, Covestro dedicated their stage space to showcase the company’s approach to achieve these goals responsibly.

Idea

Chemical and technical processes are usually difficult to visualise, therefore it made sense to design an augmented reality application. This format makes it easier to grasp complex concepts at one glance. However, AR applications also are often designed for individual users which meant that we had to build the collaborative experience we had in mind ourselves. In the end, we created a set-up that you would otherwise only find in large-scale broadcasting studios. Simply by using an iPad as a camera and a large screen.

Solution

For the implementation, we selected three Covestro projects and translated them into easy-to-understand, entertaining 3D animations. These animations were in turn incorporated into a live on-stage theatrical experience with AR. The result was a dynamic live show thriving on the interaction of presenter, audience and animated narrative.

In terms of content, the cool mini-animations addressed the topics of “Zero Hunger”, “Climate Action” and “Decent Work and Economic Growth”. The technical solution was based on the object recognition of the iPad’s camera. Physical cubes, which were part of the stage set, represented the individual SDGs. Whenever the camera focused on these, the corresponding visualisation was triggered to match and play on in real-time on the screen.
